Agarwood Trade Secrets Revealed

1. Agarwood species can look the same with each other especially Aquilaria Malaccensis (Indonesia, Malaysia) and Aquilaria Crassna (Vietnam).
2. High oil/resin content does not mean quality is high. The active content must be high also. Else it is like low quality perfume in volume only.
3. Many agarwood beads are painted and coated. They look very nice on surface finish. Fake ones just look like how rosewood furniture are treated with paint and lacquer. Look for natural occuring patterns just like patterns on zebras and flowers.
4. Agarwood species are exported and imported in many countries. Some agarwood are shipped to another country for sales. Thus, country of origin is not clear these days. Species can also be mixed up in seller stocks also ! Buy from reliable sources only.
5. Cultivated agarwood and natural agarwood are gettting mixed up in the market among buyers. They look almost the same at times on the exterior. But burning scent can tell the difference. Cultivated agarwood is not valuable as they are planted almost everywhere now, the scent and active content cannot be compared to natural agarwood.
6. Price of agarwood is not fixed and has no standard. Usually, they are overly marked up 10 - 20 times in retail !
7. There are recent trend in making artificial agarwood using low quality agarwood base. They are pressurised with oil/perfume in a machine. After processing, they look black in colour and smell nice. When burnt, there is smell of wood burning and chemical scent.
8. Sinking Agarwood is always a mysterious term. Sinking agarwood only exists in less than 3% of overall agarwood harvest. Nowadays, many are impregnated with oil to make it heavy or plunge with metal piece to make it sink. Doing an X-Ray or breaking up the agarwood piece will reveal the truth. Then, submerge agarwood piece in water to see if it sinks in water. It should sink if it is authentic sinking agarwood.
